The people in Kazakhstan are consuming more medicinal products and domestic manufacturers cannot meet this demand. Over the year, the imports of medicines has increased by 33%, and the share of imports in the domestic market is estimated at 58-100%.

The importers are trying to regain their positions in Kazakhstan, as 16.6 thousand tons of drugs were imported to Kazakhstan in January-August, or 32.9% more than in the same period of 2016. As a result, in physical terms, the imports of medicines exceeded not only the level of 2016, but also the one for 2015 (14.6 thousand tons in 8 months).

In monetary terms, the amount of imports has increased less significantly (by 21.2% to $524.2 million)

The figures indicate that, this year, the decline of imports to pharmaceutical market of Kazakhstan observed since 2014 has stopped.

The imports are rising in response to increasing demand for medicines by consumers in Kazakhstan. While the consumption of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals is growing, the sales of supportive and preventive drugs are falling.

Germany continues to lead in drug imports to the Republic of Kazakhstan, as the German-manufactured medicines amounted to 17.8% of imports ($93.4 million) this year. The value of German medicinal products imported to Kazakhstan jumped by $15.3 million year-on-year.
