The first shipment of Russian yellow fever vaccine to Latin America was made due to the joint efforts of St. Petersburg Institute of Vaccines and Serums of FMBA of Russia and FSBSI Chumakov Federal Scientific Center for Research and Development of Immunobiological Products of Russian Academy of Sciences of FASO of Russia.
60,000 doses of vaccine have arrived to Managua (Nicaragua) on March 14 in compliance with all requirements of the “cold chain.” Considering the acute need of the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health in this vaccine, the shipment was made urgently and in the required amount.
The direct shipment of vaccine to Nicaragua is a one-time event which, according to those involved in the process, could be the beginning of cooperation between Russia and Nicaragua on vaccine supplies to Latin America. This is facilitated by the existence in Russia of Mechnikov, S.A., a joint Russian-Nicaraguan immunobiological company.
According to WHO, there are only four pre-qualified manufacturers of yellow fever vaccine in the world, including Chumakov Federal Scientific Center for Research and Development of Immunobiological Products (Russia), Bio-Manguinhos Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Brazil), Pasteur Institute of Dakar (Senegal) и Sanofi Pasteur (France), the capacity of which cannot meet the global demand for this vaccine.
